Make a block each month in the color revealed at the meeting. Instead of just making, say, an orange block, I used the color wheel to work with the challenge color. I decided to make crazy quilted hearts.</p><p>One month, the color was orange. Using an analogous color scheme, I created this:</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgY0vLZGk2x5_nr06gzXPgMIiq2GgUWoKuUlfAn2Pd6AXAgB63MjlyuA3yLav2momsckd6iytM_OaVap5T4J5YLC8uqhd2_-wyenyybCi-afY7nnufqG5zzWX2gFJ_FQudFTYHyZnamF-jz7L_yVM1Z36o85RFiC5P08SdCBcdA-iKLNtlYlYljBXi1/s2068/5B4F08A3-A3EC-4663-A69C-6B8AF2A569FD.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2068" data-original-width="1724" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgY0vLZGk2x5_nr06gzXPgMIiq2GgUWoKuUlfAn2Pd6AXAgB63MjlyuA3yLav2momsckd6iytM_OaVap5T4J5YLC8uqhd2_-wyenyybCi-afY7nnufqG5zzWX2gFJ_FQudFTYHyZnamF-jz7L_yVM1Z36o85RFiC5P08SdCBcdA-iKLNtlYlYljBXi1/s320/5B4F08A3-A3EC-4663-A69C-6B8AF2A569FD.jpeg" width="267" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Analogous means the colors are next to each other on a color wheel. To one side of orange is red-orange; on the other side is yellow-orange.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">The next month the color was light blue. Using a triadic color scheme, where three colors are evenly spaced around the color wheel, I created this heart:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNU0k2Ja72oTiGsPN1xQzLhY6tkzhOFicy1fRk8mj-1znXH2Za3fNhwBhzwZTYpvWExOfzlqc2SDBOkeCrCBk8lsV7bvayD7E407snpQ-23zWqDq7npBJlsbsOGYB8BDuvZ8qtEe3CE-At3RvREy9e4CLmIG434ULXtCY96YS_GC3gPGmgwFe2WWDV/s1970/A8B673FF-B18F-4E09-A524-A3A662A88F79.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1970" data-original-width="1808" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNU0k2Ja72oTiGsPN1xQzLhY6tkzhOFicy1fRk8mj-1znXH2Za3fNhwBhzwZTYpvWExOfzlqc2SDBOkeCrCBk8lsV7bvayD7E407snpQ-23zWqDq7npBJlsbsOGYB8BDuvZ8qtEe3CE-At3RvREy9e4CLmIG434ULXtCY96YS_GC3gPGmgwFe2WWDV/s320/A8B673FF-B18F-4E09-A524-A3A662A88F79.jpeg" width="294" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Instead of light blue, I used light blue-green with light red-violet and light yellow-orange (peach).</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">The next color was yellow and I decided to go monochromatic. That’s using the hue, tint and shade of yellow.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNw_mYhG0ck1VAhjImx-nRRaphgVKy0Ah4_SP85S_Bv4DxPTnT_evofT_BCKMGdCae7COhehj1DmO5OQzv-soVIaxX_UNwIxwqemXrGKBGdf9V0hjeuhRaYpqkgyPZ9xmcaEdEWjYY26nZBo4YDPCY8Rn0RHk7vGNwPy_HnPdW3w_XAVet_uMuUvMG/s1984/99E53A82-2F62-4C44-A41A-D6322549AEC8.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1984" data-original-width="1798" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNw_mYhG0ck1VAhjImx-nRRaphgVKy0Ah4_SP85S_Bv4DxPTnT_evofT_BCKMGdCae7COhehj1DmO5OQzv-soVIaxX_UNwIxwqemXrGKBGdf9V0hjeuhRaYpqkgyPZ9xmcaEdEWjYY26nZBo4YDPCY8Rn0RHk7vGNwPy_HnPdW3w_XAVet_uMuUvMG/s320/99E53A82-2F62-4C44-A41A-D6322549AEC8.jpeg" width="290" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Next color was purple, or as it’s known on the color wheel, violet. To split the complementary means to use the color on either side of the complementary color. Purple has a complement of yellow, instead of yellow, I used yellow-orange and yellow-green.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHLgE8RKx-Ni9Mw8D0zv5AqYB7uIHinNSRlYtxcO4vGAQWf-2vVnlhnU4DyklerxqpAir8I4rsWiHtuplq1EGAfx2FC2XzXq7XL4kXTihN6tLOWJ7rPHOWUmOeZY0_V_Uf44retoga7ylDxtPLAi1scVOyPFab4t7L8e0Wpl0oIVRsg1H4Y53JZKER/s2010/DE27D00E-BC1A-4961-9E6C-0563A369DDC5.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2010" data-original-width="1774" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHLgE8RKx-Ni9Mw8D0zv5AqYB7uIHinNSRlYtxcO4vGAQWf-2vVnlhnU4DyklerxqpAir8I4rsWiHtuplq1EGAfx2FC2XzXq7XL4kXTihN6tLOWJ7rPHOWUmOeZY0_V_Uf44retoga7ylDxtPLAi1scVOyPFab4t7L8e0Wpl0oIVRsg1H4Y53JZKER/s320/DE27D00E-BC1A-4961-9E6C-0563A369DDC5.jpeg" width="282" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Next was dark green. I make several products for The Beekman Boys. On this particular day, I was discussing and sharing Little Black Mask. This is a facial mask that tightens pores and makes skin super soft. People were trying it out on the back of their hands. They were pleasantly surprised at how well it worked. <br />

I just finished embroidering (by hand) the center of my latest crazy quilt. It was done with a single strand of silk floss (various manufacturers) and a #10 sharp needle. I used a fine line sharpy pen to trace the design onto the silk dupioni fabric. Then, I backed the fabric with interfacing to provide support, as I do not use a hoop when I embroider. I used a single strand of Bijoux metallic to outline the letters in CRAZY QUILT. </div>

My crazy quilt, "Therapy" earned a red ribbon at the Vermont Quilt Festival over the weekend. At VQF, quilts do not compete against each other; they compete against a set of criteria. A red ribbon means I scored 92-94 points.<br />

There was also a really nice antique crazy quilt on display. I enjoyed the various fan motifs and blocks, as well as the cauldron motif.<br />

My book, "Crazy Quilts - A Beginner's Guide" has been published by Ohio University Press! <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGmpWrpx_mnHegUMj3qFJ0qh3hlZFcmXXVsGiTI8-p37m9JMQ6xbXYlJy-ushqdUibNj8PuJZup5TSwOhnnwq-A1vBdW1CHT51ziyJqBi-lH0erH5cqSBJu8FkKGRmm3h0kWI13zVTRU8/s1600/Betty+Fikes+Pillsbury+Crazy+Quilts.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGmpWrpx_mnHegUMj3qFJ0qh3hlZFcmXXVsGiTI8-p37m9JMQ6xbXYlJy-ushqdUibNj8PuJZup5TSwOhnnwq-A1vBdW1CHT51ziyJqBi-lH0erH5cqSBJu8FkKGRmm3h0kWI13zVTRU8/s1600/Betty+Fikes+Pillsbury+Crazy+Quilts.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I am so grateful. It was a long time coming and I appreciate all my family, friends and students who kept encouraging me. To quote, "Oh Brother Where Art Thou": <span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">I cannot tell you how long this road shall be, but fear not the obstacles in your path, for fate has vouchsafed your reward.</span><span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;"> </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
You can order the book on Amazon, Barnes & Noble and from the publisher. Although the title states a beginner's guide, there are enough tips and info to satisfy intermediate and advanced crazy quilters and embroiderers. There is so much photography (which I did), that it would make a great coffee table book too. I discuss how I put my crazies together and the thought process of choosing fabrics and threads and beads, etc. The first chapter is history of the crazy quilt during the last quarter of the 19th century.</div>

On my latest project I was using acrylic pearls for a motif. After the motif was finished, I ironed it carefully. Or, so I thought! The tip of the iron came into contact with one of the "pearls" and melted it. I'm using the end of a scissors to indicate the offender.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgusIs9d6M6Dk-fu3CaBCxU7_oxU6-ow15intgtFll7WMRT-DEIYOM7Vq5WXJmfvIZT1rTsxiRbV6Bava4YWNvGIJv6JB_z9acaDN76j4Hy_EYWv9LF96WRVXlJ87Dzrz5GdfFdSjcCyj8/s1600/replace+pearl.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgusIs9d6M6Dk-fu3CaBCxU7_oxU6-ow15intgtFll7WMRT-DEIYOM7Vq5WXJmfvIZT1rTsxiRbV6Bava4YWNvGIJv6JB_z9acaDN76j4Hy_EYWv9LF96WRVXlJ87Dzrz5GdfFdSjcCyj8/s320/replace+pearl.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
Using a needle-nose pliers to grip and then break the pearl. Squeeeeeeze until the pearl breaks apart.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUKqcwV7EbRY_oQwolrvi1G8YfqV7zPbqY1m5tJnemy-FtbPbTySLzZiOw8G2vv2x-7a3GsbTPbxK6R46m02d2F0nT2ZK3vh83GxkNqJm7mi__XnDmWtuSMJ1PAecSMtPop2kZ2849Exc/s1600/replace+pearl+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUKqcwV7EbRY_oQwolrvi1G8YfqV7zPbqY1m5tJnemy-FtbPbTySLzZiOw8G2vv2x-7a3GsbTPbxK6R46m02d2F0nT2ZK3vh83GxkNqJm7mi__XnDmWtuSMJ1PAecSMtPop2kZ2849Exc/s320/replace+pearl+2.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
The pearl is gone, but the thread that previously sewed it on is still there. Leave it there. You will sew a new pearl over this space.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjm9tQnyWKU7eve4aFZRX0VmGQF_eoizhZU4CcugmmiYLcY6b-vldRGk3zGIwj2jBH-0JW1wN2kwrFBfGxl-Y2gF38gKSCpC7G4-eMPuoTYp3bO0nNnauTLBbI42cYJy1cWjvXJjaqlK0U/s1600/replace+pearl+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjm9tQnyWKU7eve4aFZRX0VmGQF_eoizhZU4CcugmmiYLcY6b-vldRGk3zGIwj2jBH-0JW1wN2kwrFBfGxl-Y2gF38gKSCpC7G4-eMPuoTYp3bO0nNnauTLBbI42cYJy1cWjvXJjaqlK0U/s320/replace+pearl+3.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
The motif all better! This technique will work for glass beads as well. <br />

Winter simply did not want to loosen its grip. Finally, the spring peepers are singing their chorus, red-winged blackbirds have appeared and plants are starting to awaken.<br />
<br />
Here is Stinging Nettles, Urtica dioica. Notice the purple/red runners that nettles sends out to spread from place to place. Yes, indeed, this plant will sting you! When it reaches about a foot high, I will harvest the aerial parts. I use garden gloves, salad tongs and scissors to harvest. Come back in a few weeks and I will share some delicious recipes for nettles. It is nutritious and really good.<br />

This is Motherwort, Leonurus cardiaca. Motherwort will grow to 3-4 feet tall. It is really a great herb for some types of anxiety, especially when someone needs to be "lion-hearted", as the Latin name suggests. I usually use it in tincture form, as it is quite bitter. </div>

Lady's Mantle, Alchemilla mollis, is just beginning to unfurl her cloak. When I lived in England, it seemed EVERY English garden had Lady's mantle. It is a really pretty mounding plant that will casually spill over a walkway. The Latin name tells of its one-time use by alchemists. There is said to be magic in the dew that collects in the folds of the leaves. I like to dip my finger in the dew and anoint my face with it. Can't hurt! And it's rather fun.</div>

If you recall, I severed the tendon and cut into the bone on my right hand (dominant hand) on June 23.<br />

Night of the Super Moon. I was reveling in the aromatic roses that grow in my garden. I as finally catching up on yard work that was hampered by all the flooding we had been having. I was working long hours in the garden. As evening was getting late, I wanted to ride that wave of goodness and get just a little more work done. I was weeding a bit of a raised bed where speedwell was overtaking the area. As I was tugging mightily on those stubborn plants, I drew back my right hand, fistful of weeds and S.L.I.C.E.D. the back of my thumb on a ceramic mushroom's broken edge. I invented a new cus word. Then, gazed down at the damage and knew I had to have stitches. I went over to the neighbors and let them know I was driving myself to the ER and could they keep an eye on the brush pile I was burning. They offered to drive me in, but the cut didn't hurt much and the hospital was just 20 minutes away.<br /><br />At the ER, all agreed I needed stitches. And a tetanus shot, antibiotics and x-rays. Now, I realized I could not bend or extend my thumb - that was very concerning. While waiting on x-rays to see if garden debris was preventing my thumb from moving, I asked the staff if I could go outside to see the rise of the "super moon". They laughed and agreed. What a glorious moon it was!<br /><br />Four hours after arriving in the ER, I was released with 5 stitches and told I had not cut tendon. However, I needed to see a hand specialist due to the inability to move my thumb. The next morning I called that doc's office. Got an appointment for Thursday.<br /><br />On Thursday, it took the hand surgeon all of 10 seconds to realize I severed the tendon completely and needed to have hand surgery the next day! Unfortunately, that meant I had to miss attending the Beekman Boys' wedding. :-(<br /><br />Surgery showed not only did I severe my tendon, I also cut into the bone! The joint had to be debrided, the ends of the tendon found and sutured together. I woke up with a cast and told I would have to wear it for months and have physical therapy for months.<br /><br />Naturally, it is my right hand! Stitches were removed July 8 and replaced with steri-strips. A new spica splint was made and I was bandaged up again. Under strict orders not to use my right hand as I could easily rupture the tendon repair. <br /><br />So, no stitching. Not supposed to work in the garden. Did I mention I also have rheumatoid and osteoarthritis?<br />

I've been doing what I can and trying hard not to do those things that will damage my hand further. I've just added a new pattern to my craftsy site. It's a sequin bird motif that can be stitched as is or added into a sweet fan. Looks great on a crazy quilt block! Thankfully, I had this stitched up already and just had to type up the directions. There are a ton of close up photos in the pattern!!<br />

For your amusement and enjoyment...I've created a few small stitcheries. Using vintage and contemporary materials, I've created some adornments for your home. The first measures 8" x 5" and has a wide vintage ribbon for the background. Antique black lace graces the image of the lady dressed for a night on the town. Careful! A nightbird is whispering not-so-sweet nothings in her ear! $45 plus shipping. <a href="mailto:bpills@midtel.net" target="_blank">Email me</a> if you wish to purchase.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Next, is something a little sweeter...A beautiful child with a chain of daisies in her hair graces this heart, which measures 6" x 5". Vintage tatting and a silk ribbon trim provide interest in the background. The ecru lace motif is highlighted with pearls. $30, plus shipping. <a href="mailto:bpills@midtel.net" target="_blank"> Email me</a> if you wish to purchase. <br />

Finished~!! I am quite impatient for spring to arrive here in the northern Catskill Mountains. Still several inches of snow on the ground, it's 38 degrees and the winds are howling. But, this piece is most definitely spring like. It's not crazy pieced...I used a packet of Pomegranate Bali Batik squares as the background. I then cascaded a rose-bronze lace and wired ribbon, added some vintage lace motifs, lots of beads, embroidery and silk ribbon. I quilted just a bit of the background. Then, I bound it with a velvet ribbon. Note the green man (or two), dragonflies, butterflies and fairies. Yup, 'tis truly the wild garden of my heart.<br /><br />Bettyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13499072653452912908noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4671874700004647844.post-44243728008170057832013-03-21T04:49:00.000-07:002013-03-21T04:49:13.689-07:00A Hover of Dragonflies!It is 7 degrees on this snow-covered, first full day of spring! But, I am not despairing because a Hover of Dragonflies has appeared! Okay, so I spent yesterday stitching them, but that's still magic, right? <br />

These dragonflies are beaded. Some day I will do a sampler of embroidered ones. I wanted to show ideas for dragonfly wings and bodies using beads I had on hand. The large, dark dragonfly in the center has actual beetle wings for his wings, a glass face bead and crystals for its body. The upper right dragonfly has natural pearl sticks for wings and AB crystals and spacers for the body. I did add legs to that fellow. It's fun to play. And who knows, maybe I have invoked the spirit of spring and warmer weather will soon follow.<br />

Here's the February block for the CQJP 2013. I chose the Scilla fairy fabric, although it is still very frozen here in the northern Catskills of NY state! Scilla don't appear hear for another month or so. The vintage image of the girl with the snow muff reminds of us that winter is still very much here. <br />

I am participating in the Crazy Quilt Journal Project 2013. I started last year's CQJP, but only got the January, February and March accomplished. I was working with the paisley shape. <br />
<br />
This year, I am making blocks using Flower Fairy Fabrics (a Michael Miller fabric) with images by that renowned artist, Mary Cicely Barker. I'm also an herbalist. When I can blend my two loves together, it's a good thing. <br />
<br />
This year, Elderberry is Herb of the Year. I had the elderberry print from the fabric line, so, it seemed a natural for the January block. All the work is by hand. Even the beaded fringe at the bottom, which I had made years ago and had waiting for the perfect project. Because elderberries are often found in hedgerows in England (I lived there for four years), I wrote Hedgerow Magic on twill tape and added it below the fringe. Elderberry is exceptional medicine - every year I make elderberry syrup, elderberry tincture and sometimes, elderberry glycerite. And, of course, elderberry pie! Often, elderberry chutney makes it way to the table. I make elderflower syrup and fritters as well.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I painted the fairy charm, she started out as silver. The silk ribbon flowers above the fairy are elderflowers. <br />

I dyed the lace flowers that are on the right side of this photo. The heart is stitched with a cable chain stitch in silk pearl. Gold #4 braid for the intersections within the heart. Then, burgundy pearls and the beaded dragonfly were added. The flowers on the green velvet patch are made with pearls, seed beads and twin-hole beads.<br />

Yesterday, September 22, 2012, the Autumnal Equinox, saw the installation of the first Quilt Barn Block in Schoharie County, NY!! And it is on my barn! Ginny Schaum started the local edition of the national movement of putting painted 8' x 8' quilt blocks on barns. I quickly became a committee member (Sharon Aitchison is another committee member) and first volunteer to have a quilt block on a barn.<br />
<br />
Because I am a crazy quilter and instructor, I had to have a crazy quilt block. I have an extensive collection of Victorian crazy quilts and Victorian booklets about crazy quilting and embroidery. Years ago, enamored of one particular drawn block in a booklet, I had to create it.<br />
<br />
<br />
Here is the drawing from the book.<br />

The Victorians assumed you knew how to piece and embroider a block. (If you don't know how, that's why I give lessons!!) <br />

This is my interpretation of the block. All hand pieced and embroidered.<br />
I thought this block would make a terrific Quilt Barn block. <br />

The Schoharie Valley Piecemakers, the quilt guild to which I belong, donated money to purchase the sign-grade plywood. Bill Schaum, Ginny's husband, put together the framing and plywood and primed it.<br /><br />
Next, I drew the lines for the patches and started painting.<br />

The barn was red with white doors. That wouldn't go with the new block! For a few years, discussions had been had about painting the barn plum anyway. Now seemed like a good time to do it! So, the doors became Hunter Green and the body of the barn is Canadian Black Raspberry. Did I mention the house is painted Rose with Wine and Buttercream trim and a Hunter Green roof? I only got the front and one side done for this year. Next year, I'll paint the rest!<br />

There are already several more Quilt Barn Blocks in various stages in Schoharie County!! We hope more will join in the fun. When there are 40 or so barns with the quilt blocks, a pamphlet will be made so you can take a driving tour throughout the county, looking for the wonderful designs. And maybe stop for a bite to eat along the route, shop, enjoy the gorgeous views and relish the country life. <br />

The Quilt Barn Trail is a national movement, started a few years ago, to paint quilt blocks onto 8' x 8' sheets of wood and install them onto barns. Many states have these trails and you can google Quilt Barn Trail to see the hundreds of wonderful projects. The idea is to drive the trail and see the quilt blocks and the barns. This brings an appreciation for rural life to those who drive the trail.<br />
<br />
I live in the hamlet of Huntersland, in Schoharie County. Last August, the area was devastated by Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee. Ginny thought starting a trail here would help heal the community. I agree! So, the first quilt block in Schoharie County will be installed at my place.<br />
Ginny's husband, Bill, has done a tremendous amount of work in assembling the sign-grade plywood and framing it and priming it, so I could start painting. <br />
<br />
Naturally, I wanted a crazy quilt block. Had to be!! I used an antique block design that I had in my collection of Victorian ephemera. Many years ago, I embroidered (by hand, of course) this quilt block. See the images above. I decided this would be a lovely, if somewhat complex, design to paint for the Quilt Barn Trail. I just finished applying the base coats of paint. This coming week I will add the floral motifs and seam stitchery in paint.<br />
<br />

If you would like to donate to this worthy cause...the wood, paint, framing, etc costs a few hundred dollars per block! Go to
<a href="https://www.facebook.com/schohariecounty.quiltbarntrail">https://www.facebook.com/schohariecounty.quiltbarntrail</a> and message
Sharon or Ginny there. You could also order a mailbox cover to show

This is my award-winning crazy quilt, "Crazy Diamonds" in my garden. That's an Apothecary Rose to the left. Apothecary roses date back to at least the 14th century and are one of the variety of roses I use in some of my herbal products. It has a deep fragrance. The crazy quilt I stitched completely by hand. All the piecing, embroidery, painting and embellishments (even the sashing) was done by hand.
